Printed Book or E-book?
So this weekend I made a survey on Instagram (the_breakbook) to find out which one of these two was more popular. The results were kind of obvious, the major part of the surveyed people preferred a printed book over an e-book (70%-30%.)
I assume that this is because most of my followers are avid readers and they find reading as well as I do a complete experience, that includes almost all senses, not only the sight but the touch, the smell and the sound. It is not the same to read a traditional book than to read an e-book; for instance while you read a physical book you touch it, and can smell the pages, which have different smells, depending on which type of paper has been used, the time stored, etc...
But, it has a counterpart. For instance, the huge amount of resources needed to produce and publish one book. As well as the storage space you must have to save all of the books you've read and finally the amount of trash they produce. I don's know if you do the same thing as I do when I don't fancy a book I've already read; usually I donate them or sell them to second hand bookstores. But not everyone does this, a lot of people just throw away the book without even separating it for recycling; increasing pollution.
So, one day after analyzing the cons of printed books I decided to buy an e-book, just to see if I liked it or what was it. The first pro I founded was the price, usually e-books are cheaper than printed books, this is because they need less resources to produce them and because they are easier to distribute. On the other hand, it doesn't take too much storage space either physical or digital as they are small or you can have them on your cloud before and after reading it. Another advantage was that I could underline the important things, or my favorite phrases which I usually don't do in printed books, finally I was able to change the font size, this is very important for me because my mother can't read very small font sizes and sometimes even though she wants so bad to read a book, she can't.
Obviously, it also has its cons; for instance you cannot sense the pages' passing through or smell them while you are reading it. Another problem I found specially with this e-book was that I had to read it in my computer or iPad and the light was hurting my eyes. But I solved that easy; I bought a Kindle which has a less harming light and has no reflects while reading under the sun or outside. After I bought the Kindle I gave E-books another chance, and I absolutely loved it, I am not saying I prefer it above a printed book, but for some books that are hard to get in your country or those without drawings and charts is completely fine and even delightful to read; specially when you're traveling and like me usually reads two books per trip, I don't have to bring in the two books but only my kindle.
So if you have the curiosity on knowing how this works give E-book a try, you might find that the experience is not as bad as you imagine and maybe, just maybe you will even prefer it sometimes, like me!
